Chapter 26
Before Willow and I entered the cistern, one of Ronâs people handed us an oil lamp.
It was dark inside, but the light chased off the blackness, and the moment we stepped inside the structure, a fresh scent made its way to my nose â reminiscent of lemongrass, except a little more neutral.
Much different from the dank, moist odor I had expected.
Willow breathed in deeply. âOh,â she moaned, her exotic voice causing my blood to rise. âThis is⦠hmm, this smells nice.â
âHonestly, I thought Jimmy was joking when he said it was nice inside.â
She chuckled. âSo did I.â
We continued over the dry and firm flagstones, and the dim light of our lamp showed us tapestries that hung from the walls. Ahead, screens of paper framed in wood formed a partition into the next room.
As we stepped toward it, someone chuckled.
âWhat the ââ
A moment later, two women stepped out from behind the partition. Like us, they carried a small lamp. Their hair and clothes were wet, and they studied me with interest â enough to make Willow cling to my arm a little tighter, even though these two could never compete with the mysterious and exotic beauty of the Dusk.
âYou are here to bathe or get water?â one woman asked.
Batheâ¦
I suddenly became very aware of the dust and dirt caked onto my body with sweat.
âBathe!â we said at the same time, then exchanged a glance and laughed.
âHm,â the other woman mused. âA shame you did not get here earlier.â
Her friend chuckled. âThe bath is free,â she said. âRight there.â She pointed around the corner of the partition. Then, with a fat wink, she slipped past us, her friend in tow. Both ogled me as they headed out.
I smiled, a little confused at how free the women seemed. They did not conceal their interest and were a lot more direct than I was used to.
Perhaps there is less time for beating around the bush when life may end any moment?
I looked at Willow again. âYou want to go first?â I asked.
Her red eyes blazed as they rested on me. âWater is precious,â she said. âWe should not waste it. Why go alone?â
Her grip on my arm grew tighter still. She pressed herself closer, and her delicious natural aroma, a hint of cinnamon at its edges, made its tantalizing way up my nostrils. One of her breasts â firm and supple â pushed against my arm.
There was a plea in those large, red eyes.
And my entire world was suddenly Willow. I did not wholly understand what had come over her, but the Augurâs mask came off at the very least, and she proved to be vulnerable but tender and loving out in the wild.
And I liked her.
Not just for her beauty and the air of exotic mystery about her, but for the vibrancy I had sensed when she first touched me in Lorenâs RV. She was full of life and love, sincere and sweet. The slight naivety that she showed about the ways of the world and how she clung to me for protection only made her more endearing to me.
